“We are making photographs to understand what our lives mean to us.”

American Portrait Project

The American Portrait Project began in spring 2008 when I read an article about the peace symbol turning 50. The symbol was created in 1958 by Gerald Holton from the semaphore letters for N and D, standing for nuclear disarmament. ~ Peace Symbol Article ~ I decided to recognize the importance of this symbol by making peace portraits. I soon realized I wanted to include the US flag to highlight the increasing incongruity of US government actions and the universal goal of peace.
